Pee Dee AHEC: Domestic Violence Course

Course Description

Domestic violence is a pervasive public health issue. This course examines how domestic violence may be defined, the prevalence of domestic violence, and the intersection between intimate partner violence, stalking, and homicide. Screening/assessment strategies and interventions that may promote safety and stabilization for victims/survivors of domestic violence will be explored. Resources available to assist victims/survivors of domestic violence will also be discussed.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

1) Define domestic violence.

2) Describe the prevalence of domestic violence.

3) Describe screening strategies for domestic violence.

4) Explain at least two interventions that can be used to promote safety and stabilization for victims/survivors of domestic violence.

5) Identify resources available to assist victims/survivors of domestic violence.

6) Describe the intersection between intimate partner violence, stalking, and homicide.

Instructor

Dr. Erika Smith-Marek, PhD, LMFT, CITS

Dr. Smith is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Northwest Florida. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences at Northcentral University. She is an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor with over fifteen years of experience specializing in the treatment of trauma and posttraumatic disorder. She is also a Certified Trauma Treatment Specialist through the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists and EMDR International Association Approved Consultant and Certified Therapist in EMDR Therapy. She especially enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, reading, and long-distance trail running.

Counselors or Family Therapists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Other Interested Health Care Providers

Credit Hours

AHEC: This program is approved for 0.2 CEU's (2.0 clock hours) by Pee Dee AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best Practice standards.  Participants must attend 90% of the program and complete an evaluation in order to receive a certificate of attendance.  No partial credit will be given.

Counselors and Therapists: This program is approved for 2.0 hours of continuing education credit. The South Carolina AHEC system is recognized as a permanent sponsor of continuing education by the South Carolina Board of Examiners of Licensure of Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Psycho-Educational Specialists.  {Provider number is #65
